Melinda's Experience in Family Literacy Class so far

Hello all my name is Melinda and I am a student here in the Family Literacy Class in la push Wash.. (here take a look). I first came into class in mid November and returned in the new year of 2011. We have covered a lot of ground in the short time I have been here. I found out where I stood level wise in reading and in math and I have been working on getting better at both of these subjects and Sue has gone above and beyond to help me with Algebra and English. I have also learned new techniques in how to have better patience with my children with Dee's parenting classes on Tuesdays. I have shared these new techniques with my children and let me tell you they were attentive and eager to try some of the things I have learned to help them as well as myself to control our emotions especially when it comes to the angry ones. The kids tell me they "juggle" out their anger and it helps them get along better I think. I haven't gotten any bad reports on how they aren't getting along anymore which shows me even though we are miles apart I am still right there with them.

On Wednesdays and Thursdays I get to be in Sue's Class and boy o boy the eagerness I have to be here and to start on subjects without being told to really amazes me . We are reading together out of a book I picked, Julie of the Wolves:

The next book will be her pick (can't wait to see what book it will be).How much I have done with sue inspires me to do better for myself as well as my brain...ha ha but no seriously I deeply enjoy what we have done so far and am excited to see where we will be down the road.
More to come....I guarantee it TTFN

GED Completion Celebration

Our family literacy class focuses on all sorts of interesting topics. Thank goodness Sue is more competent at teaching English, math, writing, science, and technology than she is at teaching cake frosting!

CONGRATULATIONS Michelle WARD.!!!!

Melinda looks like she might challenge that word, Sue.

*note the sad (albeit thoughtful) cake that teacher

Many good wishes for continued success Michelle!

So today i set a goal with Sue. Yay!!!!! Now to see if I can do it. Lol.

We also read the introduction to "The Hip Mama's Survival Guide." It was really interesting. I hope to read more when I have some free time. :}

I looked up the 'Hip Mama' magazine. The author of the book, Ariel Gore started it as a project for college. It is interesting and I hope to read that one too.

American Bullfighter: A Challenge on Many Different Levels

The film 'American Bullfighter' is a documentary about a Basque-born American citizen who spends his childhood living in Spain then moves to the United States. He grows up and loses much of his life to alcoholism. In this film, Alex tries to regain his sense of pride and self-esteem (and the love of his father) by training to be a matador in Spain.
Preparing for the big day....he says the prayer fo the Matodor.

In the ring....

As a teacher, I found it very difficult to complete this task from beginning to end because my students were not completely interested. (Some were...thanks to those of you who stuck it out).
In many ways, I was the bull and my students were the talented matadors....swinging capes to distract me from goring [read: boring] them with more school tasks!!!! : )
In the end though, we had some good conversation and I hope to re-visit the lessons Alex learned from his experiences in the bullfighting ring.
